Colossal

Writer/Director Nacho Vigalondo’s Colossal is a colossal failure, not only for Anne Hathaway’s ridiculous hairstyle, but for a dumb story about children in a lightning storm that grow up to be drunkards, who somehow create monsters that attack Seoul, Korea of all places. (Investors, maybe?)

The nonsense must have been created in a group binge and the only thing I have to say about it is for you to stay away.  This is the second worst film of the year so far and it only deserves a 1.4 out of 5.

The Fate of the Furious

Director F. Gary Gray’s The Fate of the Furious is an action-packed thriller that is designed for all of us who have been fans of the Fast and Furious franchise.  

 

The addition of Charlize Theron as the team’s nemesis Cipher and her hold over Dom (Vin Diesel), the essence of which I won’t divulge, along with the interplay between Jason Statham’s and Dwayne Johnson’s characters, makes for even more excitement than past episodes.

 

Whether you’re a franchise fan or just like great action with bits of comedy thrown in, you’ll certainly enjoy The Fate of the Furious. 

My only objection was that there is a better and more exciting way in which one of my favorite characters should have departed the story.  That’s the only thing I hold against Writer Chris Morgan’s story.

Nevertheless, I give The Fate of the Furious a 4.3 out of 5.

The Zookeeper's Wife

Director Niki Caro’s The Zookeeper’s Wife is a harrowing, but extremely well-made drama about the keepers of the zoo in Warsaw, Poland, during the Nazi occupation in World War II.

 

Although I find it difficult to watch films concerning the Holocaust, Jessica Chastain as Antonina Zabinski (the Wife), the wonderful animals and the strong script by Angela Workman made the film enjoyable despite its tense subject.

Of course, having a good bad guy makes dramas more thrilling and Daniel Brühl makes an exceptional bad guy as the Nazi commander in charge of the zoo.

Production Designer Suzie Davies created a great tableau against which Cinematographer Andrij Parekh captured the action with the necessary excitement.

The Zookeeper’s Wife is well worth seeing.  I give it a 4 out of 5.
