Burn Country

Writer/Director Ian Old’s indie feature Burn Country is a well-made indie feature with excellent performances by Melissa Leo, James Franco, Thomas Jay Ryan and, especially, newcomer (to me) Dominic Rains.

Rains plays an Afghan immigrant to the U.S., who is living in a Trumpian Northern California backwoods town with the mother (Leo) of the reporter (James Oliver Wheatley) for whom he had been an interpreter in Afghanistan.

This conceit of turning the usual American finding his way in a foreign land to an Afghan finding his way in America makes for an interesting story; a frightening one, at that.

Though there is some confusion late in the script, I give Burn Country a 3.8 out of 5. Olds is certainly a filmmaker to watch.

I hope you can catch it on Netflix, if it doesn’t get a theatrical run.
