Rocks in My
Pockets is Writer/Producer/Director/Editor
Signe Baumane’s delightfully crazy quest for sanity.
The animated film takes us
on an amazing journey into the lives of 5 women within Signe’s family, each of
whom is or has battled depression or madness.
This is an extraordinary
work, considering there were only a handful of people (Signe, Sturgis Warner,
Wendy Cong Zhao, Rashida Nasir) who did the work that it
usually takes over a hundred artists to do in making an animated feature.
The images are exciting
and fun, the story is poignant and real and the music by Kristian Sensini supports the voiceover,
splendidly. Even those who don’t,
normally, appreciate animated films may well enjoy this one.
I give Rocks
in My Pockets a 4 out of 5.
PS: Note that Rocks
in My Pockets is a low-budget, independent work and does not have a marketing budget. It is, currently, at the IFC Theater in
Manhattan and will be at the Laemmle Royal in Los Angeles, starting Friday,
September 12.
