Dumbo

The dilemma for Director Tim Burton’s Dumbo is that Screenwriter Ehren Kruger’s script is, actually, a “grown-up” story in what’s supposed to be a kid’s movie.

I, thoroughly, enjoyed the story, the production values, the animatics, the performances of Eva Green, Michael Keaton, Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito and the kids, Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins. However, except for the parts where Dumbo flies around, the kids under 7 were fidgety and more talkative than in other animated movies I’ve, lately, seen.

So, if you’re at all nostalgic, you might want to leave the kids at home and see a new and more adult version of this old classic.  I think you’ll enjoy it, too.

I give Dumbo a 4.3 out of 5.

The Wind

Director Emma Tammi’s The Wind has excellent Cinematography thanks to Lyn Moncrief and good acting from Caitlin Gerard.

As for the story, you can guess from where the wind blows.

Best to keep up wind.

I give The Wind a 2 out of 5.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase

Since it was the first Nancy Drew adventure I read as an adolescent, I had to see Director Katt Shea’s Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase to find out how it would stand up, today.

I’m happy to say it was a refreshing take on the tale, deserving of a broader audience than just Nancy Drew fans.

Sophia Lillis is a spirited Nancy and both Andrea Anders and Laura Wiggins are charming, as well.

I give Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase a 3.6 out of 5.
