Director Emmanuel Mouret’s Mademoiselle
De Joncquières (Lady J) is a somewhat disjointed revenge tale in which
a dispassionate widow Madame de La Pommeraye (Cécile de France) gives into the
charms of a libertine Marquis (Edouard Baer).
When he betrays her, she
concocts a plot with two women from a brothel (Alice Isaaz and Natalia
Dontcheva) to ruin him.
The pacing of the story is disjointed
and jumpy in the first act and doesn’t really settle down to be watchable until
the third act. It seems more an excuse
to wear fancy dresses than be a film.
And, I say that as a big fan of Cécile de France, who does her best to keep the film interesting.
And, why they expanded the title from Lady J is a mystery, but does show the puffery of this production.
I give Mademoiselle De Joncquières (Lady
J) a 2.7 out of 5.
