Writer/Director Xavier Legrand’s Custody (Jusqu’À
La Garde) is an extremely intense
and gripping film, starring two admirable French actors, Léa Drucker and Denis
Ménochet.
The plot concerns the custody battle over the divorcing couple’s
adolescent son (Thomas Gioria), who does not want to see his potentially violent
father, much less live with him.
Cinematographer Nathalie Durand effectively pulls the
audience into the action in what might otherwise be a TV drama.
And, that’s the issue for this film. As well-made as it is, I don’t think it will
get much of an audience on theatrical screens, but should do very well on
Netflix, Hulu or Amazon.
I give Custody a 3.5 out of 5.
