Director Nick Broomfield’s documentary Marianne
& Leonard: Words of Love is an intriguing study of the life of singer/songwriter
Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen.
It’s only after the failure of his first novel, that,
with the support of singer Judy Collins, Leonard Cohen turned to songwriting
and then singing his words.
What’s most amazing about this film is the fact that
Broomfield had so much footage and recordings of Cohen, Ihlen and others in
their lives, dating back to the ‘60s.
If you want to understand the genesis of this iconic
singer/songwriter, Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love is well-worth your
time. Understand, however, that this is
not always a happy tale.
I give Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love a
3.9 out of 5.
