Writer/Director James Gunn has created what I’m sure will
become one of the biggest summer blockbusters with Guardians Of The Galaxy.
This is a Marvel franchise with which I was not familiar,
but, judging by the size of the early audiences, I was certainly in the
minority. And, what was of a heartening
and unique happenstance was that there were many fathers that had come to the
movie with their teenaged sons.
The Guardians are a motley crew of 5 warriors, ranging
from a rogue human or Terran named Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), a green-skinned
warrior princess named Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a tattooed hulk named Drax (David
Bautista), a wolverine named Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and a tree named
Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).
They have to track down a mysterious orb with which the
evil Ronan (Lee Pace) plans to destroy all civilizations and rule what’s
left.
What makes this movie rise above the similar genre fare
is the humorous script of Gunn and Co-Writer Nicole Perlman, plus the countless
otherworldly characters created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. It’s action-packed, to be sure, but it’s
also a lot of fun.
I give Guardians Of The Galaxy a 4+ out of
5.
