After Everything

Co-Writers/Co-Directors Hannah Marks’ and Joey Power’s drama After Everything shows the duo can draw excellent performances from actors, but need to come up with more interesting material.

Chris (Joe Keery), a young loser, hooks up with Mia (Maika Monroe), a young marketing assistant, and draws her and our sympathy, when he is diagnosed with a rare cancer.  The bonding and eventual marriage of the couple is well-handled by all, but after everything Chris goes back to being a loser and we’re happy Mia is coming into her own as a woman.

The problem with the story structure is that it starts out with the film being about Chris and later switches to being about Mia.  And, the problem with the production is the editing style of Gordon Grinberg, which, thankfully, calmed down after a bad opening.

Although I look forward to more work by Marks and Power, as well as Maika Monroe, I can only give After Everything a 3.2 out of 5.
