While it’s been clear for the last decade that Greta
Gerwig is a fine actress, her new filmLady
Bird proves she may be an even better Writer/Director.
This coming-of-age story, starring Saoirse Ronan (Lady
Bird), takes place in Sacramento, CA, aptly described as California’s
Midwest. The young woman is a member of
the high school Class or 2003, the last class before the era of cell phones and
social media.
Lady Bird’s complex relationship with her mother (Laure
Metcalf), a hospital orderly, forms the crux of the story and both Ronan and
Metcalf should be considered for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for
their roles.
Gerwig, too, should be up for writing and directing awards. In counterpoint to Lady Bird’s turmoil, her weaving
of the story is both clean and smooth.
Lady Bird is a testament to the
importance of Independent Cinema and should be seen by everyone who is or was a
teenager. I give it a 4.8 out of 5.
