In Director Claire Denis’ Un Beau Soleil Interieur (Let The
Sun Shine In) Juliette Binoche plays Isabelle, a divorced mother, who,
because she doesn’t have any inner “sun,” is unable to find love from the men
in her life.
There is a wonderful ending scene for this film with
Gérard Depardieu playing a psychic with whom Isabelle is reviewing the men we
have seen in the course of her story.
However, the problem here is casting. It’s hard to accept Isabelle (at least as played by
Binoche) would want to be involved with the men we have seen her with during
the course of her story.
If they were handsome, debonair and/or witty, we could
get it. But, for the dogs she goes for,
a much plainer actress than Binoche would have been necessary to make it
believable. As it is, there is a
disconnect in plausibility
that descends into pity and, then, boredom until the ending scene.
I love Juliette Binoche, but I can only give Un
Beau Soleil Interieur (Let The Sun Shine In) a 2.7 out of 5.
