Writer/Producer/Director Spike Lee’s BlackkKlansman is his
best film since Inside Man.
The movie is based on the true story of Detective Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the ‘60s via his office phone, even connecting and forming a relationship with Grand Wizard David Duke (Topher Grace), while Detective Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), impersonated him in actual meetings with Klan members and becoming a card-carrying member.
The script by Lee, Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz and
Kevin Willmott ranges from hilarious to harrowing as Stallworth enjoys the ruse
and Zimmerman is always in a life or death situation.
As good as the film is, it is the last 5 minutes of the
movie that makes it really great.
I give BlackkKlansman a 4.6 out of 5.
One of the saddest movies I've seen in a long time. Perhaps being from Charlottesville and hearing that the final minutes showed harrowing images from 8/12/2017, I found myself near tears throughout. Outright sobbing and shaking during the final minutes. The hatred, violence, and racist language was almost too much to bear.
