Co-Story Writers/Directors
Ron Clements’ and John Muskers’ Moana is a joyous animated film
about Moana, a young woman (voiced by Auli’I Cravalho), who attempts to save
her tribe by finding Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson), a demi-god, who stole the
heart of the Ocean, causing their island to begin to wither away.
Her quest to find Maui and force him to return the Ocean’s
heart is well-crafted with songs by Opetaia Foai’l, Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel
Miranda and the script by Jared Bush.
My only critique is the character and depiction of Maui,
which is not at all endearing or worthy
of caring about him. For that, I give Moana a 3.6 out of 5.
Still, fathers of
daughters will enjoy the movie.
