Writer/Producer/Director
Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story is, primarily, a masterfully crafted and, always,
beautifully acted drama.
Both Scarlett Johansson
and Adam Driver are worthy of Best Actress and Best Actor nominations, and
Laura Dern is most worthy of a Best Supporting Actress nomination.
Yet, be aware that this is
an incredibly sad story about the disintegration of a marriage. In fact, it is
so true to life, it could easily be nominated for Best Documentary as opposed
to Best Film.
In fact, to me, that is the
film’s weakness. Some of the scenes, especially one with a social worker
sitting like a zombie while watching the husband (Driver) eating dinner with
his son (Azhy Robertson), seem to be
drawn out of Baumbach’s personal diary, making us feel like voyeurs instead of
viewers.
Then, despite the winning
of the lucrative MacArthur Fellowship grant, the amount of money the husband
comes up with to establish his move to Los Angeles draws the film from reality
to fantasy.
Despite these few flaws, I
give Marriage
Story a 4.1 out of 5.
