Director Travis Knight’s Bumblebee
would just be a silly children’s popcorn movie, if it weren’t for
actress Hailee Steinfeld, who makes it somewhat interesting for adults, as well. And that’s only if you’re into the Transformer
franchise in which trucks/cars become giant robots.
Hailee’s character’s
(Charlie) earnestness and cleverness makes the film fun until the robot Bumblebee’s
antics become so ridiculous that I had to turn away for a while until the
action picked up.
Though there are some antics
that make suspension of disbelief almost impossible, there are some decent
action sequences that may stop your texting. But, as I intimated, kids and Transformer
fans will get a kick out of it.
I give Bumblebee a 3.7 out of 5.
